In North Carolina, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) assigns points to your driving record for traffic violations. If you accumulate 12 or more points within a three-year period, your license may be suspended. Below is a breakdown of DMV points for common violations:
NC DMV Point System:
5 Points
Passing a stopped school bus
4 Points
Reckless driving
Hit and run (property damage)
Following too closely
Driving on the wrong side of the road
Illegal passing
Failure to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian
Failure to yield right-of-way to a bicycle, motor scooter, or motorcycle
3 Points
Running a stop sign
Speeding (over 55 mph)
Failure to yield right-of-way
Running a red light
No driver’s license or expired license
Failure to stop for siren
Driving through a safety zone
2 Points
Speeding (10 mph or less over a speed limit under 55 mph)
Failure to properly restrain a child in a safety seat
1 Point
Littering from a motor vehicle
License Suspension:
12 Points in 3 years → License suspension
8 Points within 3 years after reinstatement → Possible additional suspension
